I mean, seriously. When I played through the game the first time, I didn't power up to obscene levels or anything. In fact, I didn't stop to power up but twice - before facing Azala/Black Tyrano, and before fighting the Golem Twins (though I had a bad party for that fight as well). I did complete all the side quests at the end, 'cause they're cool. No problem defeating Lavos what so ever.
Then I started a New Game+ and decided to try to get all the endings on my second play-through. The hardest one to get is the initial ending, where it's just Crono and Marle. Didn't have a problem at all.
I've read some stuff at Gamefaqs and the strategy guide, and I use a different plan for the final battle with Lavos. I first take out the left Lavos bit using Confuse (which kills him), then take out the left bit. Killing both bits kills the final form as well. For some reason, people take out the left bit, then the creature, then the right bit. Odd. For example, I just got the 'Good Night' ending, and I used Robo, Marle, and Crono. Marle hasted everyone and used Shield on herself; Robo kept everyone healed and used Barrier on himself, and Crono just wailed on the bits. Robo used Robo Tackle when he wasn't healing, and Marle even started attacking with the Valkaryie (which the extra data supports as her ultimate weapon). The final form got off.... three attacks? He revived the left bit three times; used Song once; used Dreamless (or is it called Grand Dream? I forgot. The ultimate magic attack) once; used Invading light once. Time Warped a few times, but that was it.
Wuss.
